Snorkelling and diving on Curaçao: the best spots from the shore

Curaçao is one of the few places where world-class reefs begin at the water's edge. The fringing reef runs along the whole sheltered south-west coast, usually a short swim from the beach, and drops off into deep blue at 10 to 20 metres. You do not need a boat for a memorable snorkel — you need a mask, a pair of fins and a car. Several of the best spots are ten minutes from Villa Martini.

The Tugboat, Caracasbaai (10 minutes)

The most famous snorkel on the island: a small tugboat that sank decades ago in five metres of water, now completely covered in coral and sponges and surrounded by clouds of fish. Enter from the rocky shore beside the old quarantine pier; the wreck is a two-minute swim out. Go early — dive groups arrive mid-morning.

Directors Bay (10 minutes)

Next to Caracasbaai, a small bay once reserved for Shell directors, with steps into deep, clear water and a reef wall right in front of you. Turtles are frequent visitors. Little shade, no facilities.

Jan Thiel beach (walking distance)

Fish along the rocks at either end of the bay; easy for children and a good place to try out gear.

Along the west coast

• Playa Lagun: a narrow cove with turtles in the shallows and a reef along both cliffs. Best in the morning.
• Playa Piskadó (Playa Grandi): the turtle beach — fishermen clean their catch here and turtles come to feed. Snorkel out from the pier.
• Cas Abao and Porto Mari: organised beaches with lockers and gear rental; both have reefs a short swim out (Porto Mari's "double reef" is superb).
• Playa Kalki (Westpunt): the "Alice in Wonderland" reef, with large coral mushrooms and excellent visibility.

Diving

Curaçao has more than sixty dive sites, most of them shore dives, which keeps diving affordable and flexible. The dive centre at Jan Thiel beach and the operators at Caracasbaai run try-dives, PADI courses and guided boat trips, and rent tanks to certified divers who want to dive from shore at their own pace. Highlights include the Superior Producer wreck off Otrobanda (advanced, 30 m), the Mushroom Forest and the Blue Room cave in the west, and the wall at Klein Curaçao. Water is 26–29 °C all year; a 3 mm shorty is plenty.

Doing it well

• Wear a rash guard or T-shirt and reef-safe sunscreen; your back burns while you float.
• Water shoes make rocky entries painless and protect against sea urchins.
• Never touch coral or turtles, and keep your fins off the bottom. Curaçao's reefs are healthy because people take care.
• Lionfish are invasive and venomous; admire, do not touch.
• Mornings are calmest and clearest; afternoons can bring wind and chop.
• Bring your own mask if you can — a good fit matters more than anything else — and rent fins at the beach or dive centre.
